Kefir has become my new “thing.” I have so enjoyed making my own kefir with some grains given to me by a friend.

My grains have multiplied so quickly and I have been abundantly sharing grains with anyone who will take them! I finally put them in the fridge to ferment so it would slow the process down by a few days.

Since I was making a quart of kefir a day, I was nearly over-run with it! I usually drink it at least every other day, but I only use about 1 cup at a time! I’ve been wanting to try my hand at kefir ice cream, and finally decided this was the time.

If you are unsure of what kefir is or what the benefits of kefir are, you can read more in my Cherry Kefir Smoothie Recipe.

It really is SO easy - and it tastes just like frozen yogurt. Sweet, but a little tangy, too.

My family is so funny - anytime I give them anything to drink they ask if it has kefir in it. They are on the alert! Ha! But my son and my husband had to agree that this DID taste good. They both agreed that it tasted like frozen yogurt. I'm winning them over . . . little by little.

My husband even got it out of the freezer today and had another serving! This ice cream also retains a nice texture in the freezer.

I have an ice cream maker similar to the one below (I have the older version). I found it at a thrift store for less than $15! I have been very happy with it and would highly recommend it!

I usually use vegetable glycerin in my ice creams to help keep them “scoopable,” but this cherry kefir ice cream does not need it. You can use any other fruit in place of the cherries. Blueberries would work well, and also berries. You could replace the cherries with low carb berries and this ice cream would be a FUEL PULL (assuming you were using low fat double fermented kefir)!

I want to try it soon with strawberries. I have always loved strawberry ice cream!

So, what do you need for this easy Cherry Kefir Ice Cream?

2.5 Cups Double Fermented Low Fat Kefir

2 Cups Frozen Cherries

½ Cup Gentle Sweet (or your favorite sweetener)

2 Teaspoons Vanilla

If you do not make your own kefir, you can buy lowfat plain kefir at Walmart or other grocery stores. To double ferment it, just leave it on the counter for 24 hours (without opening), then place it in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

    Sarah,
I really enjoy your posts and recipes! Thank you for what you do! Just a quick question. The double ferment process, is it really as simple as leaving a store-bought low fat plain kefir on the counter unopened for 24 hours? That's it? No adding, stirring, etc? Just leave out and then refrigerate till ready to use? I feel that there has to be more to this! Too simple...
Thank you again for your delicious recipes and sharing heart!

        Sarah,
        thank you for responding!
I have another question for you regarding this. If you double ferment the kefir and do not add cherries to it, but perhaps raspberries or other fuel pull berries, is it still a Trim healthy Mama E or would it be a fuel pull then? In other words, does double fermenting make the store bought lowfat kefir go from and E to a FP? Hope that makes sense? Thank you!

Yes, double fermenting the store bough low-fat kefir turns it into a FP. The cherries are what makes this an E. You could use a FP berry and have FP ice cream! Hurrah!

What would happen if I just blend it & put it in the freezer? I don't have an ice cream maker.

Is this made with milk kefir grains or water kefir grains?

Does it need to be double-fermented kefir? What is the reason for it...just curious.

It doesn't have to be double fermented. Double fermenting further reduces the natural sugars and carbs in the milk, and gives a smoother flavor.

You could probably use almond or cashew milk to replace the kefir?

This was an easy and delicious way to enjoy the abundance of homemade kefir (and use the last of the season’s on sale cherries). Thanks for the recipe!

if you use the glycerin, how much would you use? I have some so why not... wouldn't it make it more ice creamy??
