It’s important to know why you would need sugar-free sweetened condensed milk before beginning your keto baking or cooking journey.
While it may not be the first ingredient that comes to mind, many popular recipes actually rely upon sugar-free sweetened condensed milk to achieve the right flavors and textures.
As you know, sugar is an integral ingredient in most baking recipes because it not only sweetens the food but also creates tenderness and moistness.
However, let’s say you are eating low-carb or keto, there are still ways for your cooking or baking to taste delicious when you use sugar-free sweeteners like erythritol, xylitol, stevia, or monk fruit instead of sugar.
You can use this recipe for sugar-free sweetened condensed milk to attain the right flavors in your keto recipes, without the added sugars.
What is Sweetened Condensed Milk?
Traditional (sugar-sweetened) sweetened condensed milk is a mixture of whole milk and sugar.
It’s heated to remove about half the water from the milk, leaving a thick, sweet mixture that has a higher concentration of both nutrients and calories.

Sweeteners you can use for sugar-free condensed milk
This recipe uses Trim Healthy Mama Gentle Sweet, which is my all-time favorite low-carb, sugar-free sweetener. There is absolutely no aftertaste!
That’s because this low-carb sweetener is a powdered blend of xylitol, erythritol, and stevia instead of just being one of them.
If you don’t have access to the Gentle Sweet, it is easy to make your own Low Carb Powdered Sugar to use as a substitute.
You can also use monk fruit, or any powdered or granulated sugar substitute.
(Please be aware that xylitol is deadly to dogs, but Trim Healthy Mama has produced a Xylitol-Free Gentle Sweet. That would be perfect for dog owners!)
Now onto the tips for making this low-carb sweetened condensed milk…
STAY BY YOUR PAN
Making keto sugar-free sweetened condensed milk at home isn’t hard, but it does require your attention. Be sure to stay with your pan and not walk away.
If you do, it “may” boil over voraciously and cause your 7-year-old daughter to come screaming into the next room.
(Ahem. I may or may not have done this and it may or may not have made an awful mess).
USE THE RIGHT PAN
The larger the surface area of your pan, the faster your “milk” will reduce, so use a large shallow pan if you have one. This one is just right.
Refer to the video posted above (or in the recipe card) to know when your sugar-free sweetened condensed milk is a perfect consistency.
It shouldn’t take hours to condense (unless you double or triple the recipe), but using a large shallow pan helps make it as short a time as possible.
Please note, it also will continue to thicken as it cools.
How long does it take homemade condensed milk to condense?
It should condense in about 30 minutes, but you will see it thicken quite a bit more.
After half an hour, watch for the keto condensed milk to be reduced by at least half.
It’s ready when it is thick enough that you can make a trail with your spoon on the back of the pan and it doesn’t immediately re-fill in the space made by your “trail.” It becomes something like fudge!
STORING YOUR HOMEMADE SWEETENED CONDENSED MILK
If you do not use it right away, it should be stored in the refrigerator.
When you refrigerate it, it will likely firm up, to a soft fudge-like consistency.
This is dangerous because then you’ll want to eat it with a spoon! But otherwise, it’s a great solution that allows you to make a double (or triple!) batch.
If you need to use it for a recipe, simply microwave it for about 10 seconds, give it a good stir, and it should be ready to use in your low-carb baking recipe.
And you can stir the “fudgy” homemade condensed milk right into your hot coffee. Mmmm.
How to reheat sugar-free condensed milk
Depending on what you are making, you may end up with extra keto sweetened condensed milk that you didn’t need for your recipe.
The good news is that keto condensed milk reheats easily in the microwave!
The best way to do this would be to pour the leftover keto condensed milk into a microwavable container and heat it on high for about 20 seconds.
Then give it a good stir and heat for another 10-30 seconds until it’s fully heated up.
You could also place the jar in a small pot of water on the stove (over medium heat) for a few minutes to achieve the same results. (Be sure to place the jar in cool water and heat gradually so you don’t crack your jar!).
Why is my keto condensed milk runny?
If it’s runny, you likely had too much liquid or you haven’t cooked it long enough.
Did you use more liquid than the recipe called for?
Or did you make a double batch?
No worries! Just cook it longer (at a low temperature) until it reaches the desired consistency.
It will thicken as it cools down.
Why doesn’t my keto condensed milk have a caramel color?
If you want to add a caramel color it’s easy.
You could just add a bit of caramel extract for caramel flavoring and color.
Why is my homemade condensed milk gritty?
If your keto-sweetened condensed milk is gritty, it means that the xylitol has reacted with the erythritol.
No worries. It’s not a big deal and you didn’t burn anything!
It just means that both of these sugar-free sweeteners have “melted” together.
You can fix this by running it through a sieve to catch the gritty particles when pouring your homemade condensed milk into a jar.
It will not affect the flavor or sweetness in any way.
Does Walmart sell sugar-free condensed milk?
The Walmart stores in the US do not carry sugar-free condensed milk. You can purchase a sugar-free powdered mix online, but it uses sucralose (an alternative sweetener that is not the healthiest).
I don’t know of any place online that sells keto condensed milk.
Your best option for sugar-free condensed milk is to make your own with the super simple recipe below!
How much sugar is in condensed milk?
Condensed milk has about 44 grams of carbs and 36 grams of added sugar per 1/4 cup.
Yikes! That’s definitely not low-carb sugar-free condensed milk.
But no need to be sad, you can easily make your own at home with the recipe below!
My recipe has 2 grams of carbs and 0 grams of added sugar per 1/4 cup!

Sweetened Condensed Milk
- 2 Cups Heavy Cream
- 2 Tablespoons Unsalted Butter
- 1/3 Cup Gentle Sweet (or use the DIY version listed in the notes section)
- Place all ingredients in a medium sized saucepan or skillet* (*see notes below) over medium heat.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer until reduced by nearly half, stirring several times to prevent scorching. (You should not have to stir continuously, just once in a while.)
- This will take between 15-20 minutes.
- The end product should be thick and gooey (and delicious)!
- Makes approximately 1 -1 1/2 cups of Sweetened Condensed Milk.
