When Starbucks recently announced their Pumpkin Chai drinks, I went to my local coffee shop and asked them if they could make something like that for me. They did (and it was AMAZING - hello, pumpkin cold foam), but this homemade version can be made low-carb and sugar-free!

What is a Pumpkin Chai Latte?

A Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte combines two beloved fall flavors: the warm, spiced flavors of chai tea and the rich, creamy taste of pumpkin. The chai base consists of black tea infused with spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and cloves, giving it a warming, spicy aroma. Adding pumpkin puree and a latte's creaminess gives you a perfect balance of spice and creamy goodness.

Many people associate this drink with fall due to its bold pumpkin flavor and fragrant chai spices. Whether you're sipping on a cold day or just craving something cozy, this drink always hits the spot (even if it's February instead of October)!

How Does a Homemade Pumpkin Chai Latte Differ from a Regular Latte?

A chai latte is different from a regular latte because instead of espresso, it uses chai tea as the base. While both drinks are topped with steamed milk, the chai version gets its signature flavor from a mix of spices, including cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves, rather than the bold flavor of coffee.

So, if you’re not a coffee drinker or simply want something with a spicy kick, a pumpkin chai tea might be the perfect alternative. With the addition of pumpkin puree and pumpkin pie spice, the chai latte turns into a fall favorite—rich, flavorful, and indulgent.

How to Make a Homemade Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte Recipe

To make a pumpkin chai latte, you need a handful of pantry staples and a few seasonal ingredients:

  • Chai tea bags (or loose-leaf tea)
  • Pumpkin puree (you can use canned pumpkin or make your own homemade version)
  • Pumpkin pie spice for extra fall flavor
  • You can add a little vanilla extract for a deeper flavor (optional)
  • Sweetener of your choice (this sugar-free brown sugar would be perfect - some people may like to use real maple syrup)
  • Milk or non-dairy alternatives like almond milk or oat milk
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream, cinnamon, nutmeg or even a drizzle of sugar-free caramel sauce

It's best to use a whisk while you are heating your pumpkin chai latte in the saucepan. This will ensure that you have a smooth and creamy drink.

Pour your drink into your favorite mug and enjoy your frothy fall drink! (See below for the full recipe and instructions)

If you have an espresso machine, you can steam half of the milk using your steam wand, and then pour it on top for extra froth!

Can You Use Canned Pumpkin Puree for This Recipe?

Yes! You can absolutely use canned pumpkin puree to make your pumpkin spice chai latte. Canned pumpkin works great because it's convenient, consistent, and offers rich flavor without extra prep time.

If you're looking for a more homemade touch, you can also make your own homemade pumpkin puree by roasting a real pumpkin and blending it until smooth. Either way, the pumpkin adds the perfect creamy texture to your latte.

Does this taste like Starbucks Chai Tea Latte?

I've honestly never tasted the Starbucks chai latte, so I can't say for sure. But this homemade version is pretty tasty! (And doesn't have 42 grams of sugar!)

This version also has the pumpkin, so it will taste a little different.

How to Make an Iced Pumpkin Spice Chai Latte

Craving a fall-inspired drink but it's still warm outside? Try an iced pumpkin spice chai latte! Start by following the same recipe as above, but let the chai tea and pumpkin mixture cool down before pouring it over ice. Add cold milk (or non-dairy milk like almond milk) and stir.

You can also use a milk frother to create a creamy foam on top of your iced latte, which adds an indulgent touch. If you’re a fan of iced pumpkin chai, this version will satisfy your cravings without a trip to the coffee shop (and help you save money).

Can I use something besides almond milk?

Yes, you can use regular dairy milk, soy milk, oat milk, or another milk alternative - whichever you have on hand and enjoy using.

Keep in mind that using a different type of milk will change the nutritional information as well.

Notes

You can use any kind of milk you like (regular dairy, oat milk, etc), but the recipe's nutritional information was calculated using unsweetened almond milk.
You can use any sugar substitute you like, but make sure to take into account the varying sweetness among them. I like to use a monkfruit/erythritol blend and 2 Tablespoons would be perfect (this is what was used to calculate the nutritional information).
Whipped cream was not included in the nutritional information.
