I don’t think I am lying when I say I could eat this every day and not get tired of it. I usually have it several times a week, and I love it!
I know there are probably thousands of these types of recipes on the internet, but this particular idea came to me during my recent Trim Healthy Mama Fuel Cycle. I was looking for Deep S meals, and thought I would try a sausage and cabbage skillet. As a last minute idea I added the nutritional yeast, which really gave it a bump in flavor AND added nutrients!
(For Trim Healthy Mamas, make sure you use sausage without cheese if you are using this recipe as a Deep S meal. If you use sausage with cheese, it works great for a regular S fuel.)
If you have never heard of Nutritional Yeast, you need to try it!
According to this article on Nutritional Yeast, Nutritional Yeast has the following benefits:
- Preserves Immune Function
- Holds Antiviral and Antibacterial Properties
- Improves Digestion
- Is high in B-Complex Vitamins
- Only one teaspoon gives you 50 to 100 percent of your daily value for all B vitamins! (and in this recipe you are consuming more than 1 teaspoon)
If you have never tasted Nutritional Yeast, you do not need to be afraid to try it! It has a deliciously cheesy and nutty flavor. It can be found at most health food stores, or you can order Nutritional Yeast on Amazon.
Another thing I love about this recipe is how FAST it is! You can literally have it finished in less than 15 minutes - depending on how long it takes to cut up your cabbage. Sometimes I add other vegetables to it to add bulk. I have added asparagus and onions, but you could even add green beans or mushrooms!
If you are dairy free, you can replace the butter with refined (no flavor) coconut oil for a great dairy free meal.

Do you think you could use the bagged coleslaw mix in place of a head of cabbage?? Sorry, I’m super lazy & I can never figure out a good way to cut a head of cabbage/lettuce 🤦🏼♀️ Hahahaha!!!!!!
Sarah Hardy
Yes, I think that would work fabulously!
Becky
What about the broccoli slaw bag?? Would that be okay?? I have a bag in the fridge::)
Sarah Hardy
Yes, I think that would work! It will change the nutritional information.

I’m still new to THM and I am wondering about using bacon grease instead of butter. That’s what I am used to using to cook cabbage.
Sarah Hardy
Yes, that would be perfectly fine!
Becky
This was so delicious!! I think I’ve found my perfect lunch for during the week! The crushed red pepper adds the perfect pop of flavor! Thanks for a great, easy recipe! 🙂
Debbie
Wonderful! This was so fast and easy to make. Who knew that nutritionally yeast could make the perfect sauce. The red pepper flakes topped it off. I’m truly a fan! THANK YOU!
Brittany
There is not cheese on the ingredient list! What type of cheese would you recommend?
Sarah Hardy
Hi Brittany, there is no cheese in this recipe. The "cheese" flavor comes from the nutritional yeast, which has a cheesy flavor. 🙂
Holly
Is nutritional yeast keto?
Sarah Hardy
Yes! Hope you'll give this one-skillet dinner a try!
