Easy Cheesy Peas Recipe
Before meeting my husband, I had never heard of putting cheese in peas.
But this easy pea recipe was (and still is) one of his absolute favorite side dishes.
I love how easy it is to prepare, and the fact that it pairs well with almost anything! (Especially these Bacon Wrapped Pork Chops!)
Frozen Green Peas
This particular recipe uses frozen green peas instead of fresh. Fresh peas can be very difficult to find at certain seasons of the year, but frozen green peas are available pretty much everywhere!
How to cook Frozen Peas?
I like to steam/boil my peas in a sauce pot on the stove. Pour several cups of water into your pot.
Add a pinch of salt, and place on the stove to boil.
When the water comes to a boil, pour in the frozen peas.
After the peas have boiled for 2-3 minutes, remove them and drain well.
See how quick and easy that it?
To make cheesy peas, simply place the cooked peas back in the pot and add the unsweetened almond milk, mustard, and cheese.
Cook over very low heat until the cheese has completely melted.
Do Peas Have Carbs?
Yes, peas do contain carbs, but they also contain a good deal of fiber. In one ½ cup serving of green peas, there are 11 grams of carbs.
But when you subtract the 4.4 grams of fiber, you are left with only 6.6 grams of net carbs.
Not only are peas high in fiber, but they also have an unusual amount of protein for a “vegetable.”
No doubt this is due, in part, to the fact that peas are technically not a vegetable, but actually belong to the legume family.
If you are a Trim Healthy Mama, peas are still considered a non-starchy vegetable, but it is good to keep in mind that they are a bit higher in carbs than other non-starchies.
It is still best to stick to a ½ cup serving of peas at one meal.
I chose to use deli style American cheese for this recipe because it melts nicely, but I use the Kirkland brand of Deluxe American cheese slices.
I feel these are a much “cleaner” food than plastic-wrapped imitation cheese. (Which I do NOT like!)
But if you are uncomfortable using the cheese mentioned above, you can easily use 1/2 cup of the shredded cheese of your choice.
Other ways to enjoy Green Peas:
- 1 lb Frozen Peas
- 3 Slices American Cheese (or can use ½ cup shredded cheese of choice)
- 1 Tablespoon Mustard
- 2 Tablespoons Unsweetened Almond Milk (or Heavy Cream)
- Salt and Pepper, to taste
- Prepare peas according to package directions.
- After draining peas, return them to the saucepan and add remaining ingredients.
- Heat, over medium heat, stirring often until the cheese has melted.
