A rich and velvety hot chocolate that tastes so decadent you would never know it is low fat and sugar free!
If you have been around THM for very long, you have no doubt heard of the amazing health benefits of okra. It can help regulate blood sugar, aid in digestion and perhaps even protect against sickness. I have always loved okra, so I do not generally have a problem eating it, but I know many people struggle with the flavor. Since it is such a healthy ingredient, I am always looking for more ways to incorporate it into my diet! (If you want to see all my okra recipes, check them out here.)
My birthday was in November and my husband gave me a Vitamix Blender! I was blown away - and so incredibly excited! My Vitamix takes okra disguise to a whole new level! I cannot say enough good about my new blender. I am in love! The important thing to remember with okra is that it needs to be blended it with a small amount of liquid until it is absolutely pureed. That helps to give you a smooth velvety mixture, with no lumps, and my Vitamix does this perfectly!
I have a couple of cold smoothie/milkshake recipes, but with the weather turning colder I wanted a warm option. The fun thing about this recipe is that it is customizable to your flavor preference. So far I have had coconut, salted caramel, and peppermint! I am hard pressed to say which one is my favorite - I like all of them. I have been drinking this drink almost daily (and sometimes more than once a day). Occasionally I make it with coffee in place of the water, so it is like a mocha!
If you have trouble with okra, you should definitely give this a try! It does make a bit of a foam on the top, which I think is fine, but if you want your hot chocolate to be absolutely smooth, you may want to strain the foam off the top. This would be delicious with a spoon of homemade sweetened whipped cream on top (this would make it an "S" instead of "FP")!
This recipe is also considered a Fuel Pull, which means there is not a significant source of carbs or fats. This means you can enjoy it anytime of the day!
Ingredients
- 8-12 ounces hot water or brewed coffee almost boiling
- ¼ cup frozen cut okra or more if you are brave
- 1 Heaping Tablespoon Gentle Sweet
or ½ Tablespoon Pyure
- 1 Tablespoon Cocoa Powder
- ⅛ Teaspoon Mineral Salt
- ⅛ Teaspoon Sunflower Lecithin Powder
- 1 Tablespoon Collagen Powder
- 1 Teaspoon MCT Oil
- 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract
Instructions
- In a powerful blender (I strongly recommend a Vitamix Blender
), puree okra with water (or coffee) until okra is completely pureed. You should have a very smooth mixture.
- Add remaining ingredients and blend until well combined.

Thanks for telling me how much you like your blender, Sarah. I have used the same old Oster for 15 years and am in the market for a new one. I'm glad to hear that the blender completely liquefies the okra or I might be hesitant to try this. I've been adding the collagen to my coffee and am glad that I detect no taste. Thanks for the recommendations.

I just made this with coffe instead of water. I love the foam. I think this is the best THM hot cocoa I've tried yet. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! Who would have guessed you could put okra in a drink?!?

When I started reading your post I had no idea that your secret ingredient would be okra! What a surprise. And I totally agree - with the vitamox you can blend everything into oblivion. It is amazing.

Wow, I think I need a vitamix if it can disguise okra in a yummy drink like this!

I want to give this drink a try. Have you had problems adding collagen to your hot drink and it creating little pieces of chicken type stuff? I know weird question but I made a hot chocolate a couple was back and it ended up having weird pieces like that...was it a fluke, maybe but wanted to make sure adding collagen to hot wouldn't do that:)
dsdjhardy
No, I add Collagen to my hot coffee all the time. A milk frother is an excellent tool to use to make sure your Collagen dissolves properly!

Sounds yummy! I have been making peppermint hot chocolate a lot lately, okra would be a nutritional boost!
PS. I love your mugs, I have the same ones. ?

Thx for the recipe! Was craving hot Choc and didn't have any cocoa powder 🙁 so I subbed out a scoop of Choc whey protein powder for the cocoa and gentle sweet! Added a splash of caramel extract and it's perfect!!!???

Thank you for this recipe! I just discovered this recipe and drink it almost daily. I love the texture and the intense hit of chocolate, probably because there's no dairy in it. I tweak it with some butter and caramel extract and extra salt sometimes. I have a tip, though. The okra cools down my coffee to lukewarm, which is okay but I prefer it piping hot. I discoverd that if I blend it in my Vitamix for 60-90 seconds, it reheqts the cocoa. Perfection.

Awesome, thank you for the tip!
