Bonbons are usually individually wrapped and often considered a specialty or luxury confectionery because they can be expensive to manufacture and purchase.

But, what exactly is a bonbon? Bonbons are small candies made from chocolate and other ingredients such as fruit, caramel, nuts, and fondant.

The term "bonbon" is derived from the French language word "bon," which means "good."

It was first popular in the French royal court during the 16th century and was subsequently taken to other European countries by the 18th century.

By the latter half of the eighteenth century, bonbons were being served in beautiful containers as gifts at festivals and holidays such as New Year's Day.

The term "bonbon" has become a generic trademark for any chocolate-covered confectionery.

What are bonbons made of?

Bonbons are generally made of ingredients such as nuts, fruit, caramel, chocolate, or fondant.

What is the difference between bonbons and truffles?

There are many similarities between Bonbons and Truffles.

They are both chocolate-covered candies.

The main difference is that Bonbons are generally made of ingredients such as nuts, fruit, caramel, chocolate, or fondant while Truffles are made mostly of chocolate.

While most Bonbons are round or square, Truffles are generally shaped like a ball.

Truffles and Bonbons both are often associated with French candies.

Why are these Chocolate Coconut Bonbons Keto friendly

These chocolate coconut bonbons are low-carb and keto-friendly because they contain no added sugar.

The ingredients in these bonbons are also sugar-free, gluten-free, and dairy-free.

ingredients for chocolate bonbons

What ingredients do you need to make keto chocolate coconut bonbons

  • 1 ¼  cup dark chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon monk fruit (or another granulated sugar substitute)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil
  • ½ cup shredded coconut
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoon coconut cream, chilled

How to Make Bonbons

  1. Melt chocolate with coconut oil in a microwave for 45 seconds.
  2. Place ½ -1 tablespoon of melted chocolate in 12 small silicone molds. We need to cover the sides of the mold with chocolate. There are two easy ways to make it. One is to move the mold in circles for the chocolate to cover the sides, (this works better with the chocolate still warm). Another way to do this is to use a spoon to coat the sides of each mold. If you go with this second option it works better when the chocolate starts to thicken a little bit.

Refrigerate them for 10 minutes or until chocolate is hard.

Make the Bonbon filling

  1. For the filling place coconut cream, vanilla extract, shredded coconut, and monk fruit into a blender and blend until combine. If you like the texture of the shredded coconut, don't bother with blending. In that case, just mix the ingredients in a bowl.
  2. Add 1-1 ½  teaspoon of the filling in each bonbon. Then cover with melted chocolate to the top of the mold.
  3. Refrigerate for half an hour or until bonbons are hard enough to transfer them.
  4. Keep them in the fridge for up to 10 days.

The best way to store your coconut bonbons

The best way to store your keto chocolate coconut bonbons for later use is to keep them in the fridge in an air-tight container.

What other flavors can be made with this recipe

That's a great question! These bonbons can be made with any kind of filling you like. I think strawberry, raspberry, or pineapple sound good.

You can use extracts to flavor the filling while leaving the coconut as in the original recipe.

There may still be a bit of coconut flavor, but you'll have the added delicious fruity flavors!

You can also put melted chocolate in the bottom of the mold and then use additional ingredients for the filling.

How to package homemade bonbons for gifting

To package homemade gifts for friends and family, wrap each bonbon individually with cellophane paper before tying it off with ribbons or bows - they'll be thrilled when they receive this gift from you!

Where to find ingredients for this recipe

These keto chocolate coconut bonbons contain some pretty standard ingredients.

Most people should be able to find the following in their local grocery store:

Vanilla extract

Shredded unsweetened coconut

Monk fruit sweetener (or another granulated sugar substitute)

Lily's Dark chocolate chips

Many people also have these ingredients available in their kitchen already: coconut oil, coconut cream, and cocoa powder.

If you are having trouble locating these ingredients, you can find them on Amazon by clicking the links above.

What is Coconut Cream?

Coconut cream is thickened coconut milk that contains a high-fat content. It comes in cans and can be easily found in any grocery store or made yourself.

If you don't have coconut cream, the alternative is to put full-fat coconut milk in the fridge overnight and scrape off the top layer which will be much thicker than the rest of the milk.

Tools used to make this recipe

You can easily make these chocolate bonbons with cake pop silicone molds that come with lollipop stick holders built-in.

You can alternatively use a muffin tin and simply layer the ingredients.

To make melted chocolate, I recommend using a double boiler or putting your (chopped) chocolate & coconut oil in a bowl and microwaving it for 30 seconds at a time until it is totally melted.

You can find a double boiler at most stores that sell pots and pans, or online.

With only a few ingredients and a microwave to do the heavy lifting, these bonbons come together quickly for an easy snack or last-minute Valentine's Day gift!

Whether you're looking for a quick and easy keto recipe or want to enjoy something sweet without guilt, this one is sure to please your taste buds.

Instructions

  • Melt chocolate with coconut oil in a microwave for 45 seconds.
  • Place ½ -1 tablespoon of melted chocolate in each cavity of a 12 hold cake-pop mold. Be sure to cover the sides of the mold with chocolate. (See notes below for further instructions.)
Refrigerate them for 10 minutes or until the chocolate is hard.
  • For the filling place monkfruit sweeter, vanilla extract, shredded coconut and coconut cream into a blender and blend until completely combined.
You could avoid the blending part if you like the texture of the shredded coconut. In that case, just mix the ingredients in a bowl.
  • Add 1-1 ½ teaspoon of the filling to each each bonbon. Then cover with melted chocolate to the top of the mould.
  • Refrigerate for half an hour or until bonbons are hard enough to remove from the molds.
  • Keep them in the fridge for up to 10 days.

Notes

There are two easy ways to spread the chocolate in the mold.
One is to move the mold in circles for the chocolate to cover the sides, (better with the chocolate still hot).
Another way to do this is to use a spoon to coat the sides of each mold. If you go with this second option it works better when the chocolate starts to thicken.
_____________________
If you do not have a cake pop mold, you can also use a muffin tin.
Or, simply pour half of the melted chocolate into a parchment-lined bread pan, place the coconut filling on top, and pour the remaining chocolate over the top. (Allow each layer to harden before adding the next layer.)

There is a link in the recipe card above to order it on Amazon. You can also follow the alternate instructions above for using canned coconut milk instead of actual coconut cream. 🙂
