Sugar-Free Sweet Tea

Sugar Free Iced Tea

This sugar-free iced tea recipe is a family favorite. Squeeze in a little lemon juice, and sip away!

  • Made with 3 ingredients
  • Quick to make
  • You just need a pan and ingredients to make
  • Great for serving up at party and events
  • Affordable to make
  • Family-friendly

Ingredients For Sugar-Free Iced Tea

Water - I recommend using filtered water. Now, you can use tap water if you have good tap water where you live. I know for some areas there are issues with the water offering a flavor.

Tea - Reach for your favorite iced tea bags to brew. I used 4 family-size iced tea bags for this recipe.

Sweetener - I use Super Sweet but you can also do a sweet tea with stevia, Gentle Sweet, etc.

How to Make Iced Tea At Home

Full measurements and directions are in the printable recipe card below.

Step 1: Start by adding your water into a pot and heat up the water on the stovetop. You want to bring your water to a boil.

Step 2: Remove the saucepan from the heat and add in your tea bags to steep. Place a lid on your pot and allow it to sit 5-6 minutes.

Step 3: Add another 8 cups of water into a pitcher, and then add your sweetener to the tea and stir well. Once the sweetener is dissolved, discard the tea bags and pour in the pitcher with the water.

Step 4: Taste and flavor your tea to your liking. If it is too sweet, add more water. Want it sweeter mix in more sweetener.

Store your tea in the fridge in a pitcher until ready to serve.

How Long Does Iced Tea Last In Fridge

Sweet tea is best to be used within a few days of storing it.

If you like to sweeten one cup at a time, you can make a pitcher of plain tea, and then store it for up to 5 days. Then add sweetener to each cup once you pour it.

Health Benefits of Tea

Tea has been said to be a great drink to sip on warm or cold. There are some great benefits to drinking tea on a regular basis.

  • Different varieties are great for immune boosting
  • Helps to hydrate your body
  • Heart-healthy
  • A great alternative to a sugary soda
  • Vitamins and minerals
  • Helps keep hunger pains away so you don't eat extra
  • Source of manganese

Why Is My Iced Tea Bitter

You will find sometimes when you take a bit sip of tea you find that unwanted bitter flavor that follows. This is due to the tannin in the tea.

But, adding just a pinch of baking soda into the water when you drop in the tea bags is a great way to help eliminate unwanted bitterness.

Does Iced Tea Need To Be Refrigerated

Iced tea does need to be refrigerated once it is made. If you leave it out on the counter you will find the flavor of the tea begins to alter and go bad.

So, always keep it stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Get Recipe Ingredients

Instructions

  • Place 8 cups of water in a large saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and add the tea bags. Cover and allow the tea to steep for 5 to 6 minutes. (Steep longer for stronger tea.)
  • Meanwhile, add an additional 8 cups of water to a gallon-sized pitcher.
  • Remove tea bags from saucepot, gently squeezing to remove the excess tea. Discard the tea bags.
  • To the saucepan, add the sweetener and stir until completely blended.
  • Pour the tea into the gallon-sized pitcher with the water. Stir to combine.
  • Cover the pitcher and refrigerate. Best if refrigerated overnight.

Notes

If you have an electric tea kettle, you can heat the water in your kettle, then pour it directly over the tea bags in your pitcher.
After the tea steeps, gently remove the tea bags (squeeze them to remove the water) and add the Super Sweet directly to your pitcher.
Stir until the sweetener is dissolved, then add ice and water to fill the pitcher.

If you do not have Super Sweet, you can use an equal amount of Pyure, which can be found in most grocery stores.
Or, you can use 6 Tablespoons of Gentle Sweet or my Gentle Sweet Substitute - Low Carb Powdered Sugar.

Super Sweet is a blend of erythritol and stevia.

I have discovered that adding my sweetener to the boiling water, before the tea bags, means that it dissolves 100%, with no granules at the bottom of the pitcher. (Same concept as using sugar to create a simple syrup to make classic sweet tea.)
