It’s hard to believe that just two ingredients are all that is required for making chocolate-covered espresso beans.
But, it really is true. This recipe has only two ingredients and the result is an addictively delicious snack. And, you can make them with your kids!
All you need are:

- Sugar-free chocolate

HOW MUCH CAFFEINE IS IN ESPRESSO BEANS
The amount of caffeine in espresso beans depends on the type and quality of coffee beans used.
The more expensive, high-quality coffee beans contain less caffeine than lower-priced varieties.
The caffeine content will also depend on how much the beans are roasted.
Generally speaking, espresso beans are made from Arabica coffee beans.
These are known for not being as high in caffeine compared to Robusta’s which have more mild flavors and about twice as much caffeine as Arabicas.
A typical Arabica coffee bean contains somewhere between 1-2% caffeine whereas a Robusta can contain up to 3% caffeine.
How many chocolate-covered espresso beans equal a cup of coffee?
As an average rule, espresso beans have anywhere from 6-12 milligrams of caffeine per bean.
But if you add in the caffeine from the chocolate around the bean, it may be a bit more.
A cup of coffee has about 80-140 milligrams of caffeine depending on how it’s brewed.
If you’re used to drinking a cup of coffee with 140 milligrams, it would take between 10-15 chocolate espresso beans to get the same amount of caffeine.
This of course will vary according to the roast of the bean, and the caffeine in the chocolate used.
How many espresso beans can I eat?
You will definitely want to use moderation when eating espresso beans, as they are potent in caffeine.
Do not eat too many because there is definitely such thing as too much caffeine. It could lead to anxiety and nausea.
A small handful would probably be sufficient, or perhaps less if you have sensitivity to caffeine.

Yes, there are some flavor profile differences because of how long the beans are roasted.
Coffee beans are roasted for a shorter period of time, so they have a lighter flavor.
Espresso beans are roasted for a longer period of time, so they have a more bold, rich flavor.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED ESPRESSO BEANS
To make these sugar-free chocolate-covered espresso beans, you will want to start by lining a cookie sheet with parchment paper or even a silicone mat.
This is good so that your coated beans don’t stick to the pan.
Next, melt the chocolate in the microwave at 15-second intervals until it is fully melted, stirring at each interval (this is to keep the pesky chocolate from burning).
I opted to heat the chocolate in the microwave, but you are more than welcome to reach for a double boiler if you prefer.

Then you will coat the beans in the melted chocolate. Then with a fork, you will pull out the beans and shake them a little to get off any excess chocolate.
Then layout on your lined cookie sheet.
As an alternative method, you can spread the espresso beans out on your parchment paper and drizzle the melted chocolate over the beans.
Place in the fridge or overnight to let the chocolate set up. Then serve and enjoy these rich and caffeine-filled chocolate espresso beans.
HOW TO STORE LOW CARB CHOCOLATE COVERED ESPRESSO BEANS
If you want to keep low-carb chocolate-covered espresso beans fresh, store them in an airtight container or ziplock bag in the fridge.
If it’s hot, don’t leave them out on the counter because they can melt and stick together.
HOW MANY COFFEE BEANS IS IT SAFE TO EAT
Generally, you don’t want to go over 400 mg of caffeine in the day.
I don’t recommend needing that range of caffeine for the day.
But to equal that amount of caffeine this would range anywhere from 40-80 chocolate coffee beans depending on how much caffeine is in your beans.

If you freeze the coffee beans with chocolate you will find that condensation can build up once they begin to thaw.
The flavor will be slightly different and the texture can change in the bean a bit. So feel free to freeze in an airtight container if you would like.
