CAN YOU EAT COFFEE BEANS?
Yes, coffee beans can be eaten. In fact, roasted coffee beans have been eaten as a snack by people for years.
There are several types of coffee beans available including Arabica and Robusta.
Munching on plain roasted coffee beans may not be the most pleasant experience - so this is why we like to put our espresso beans in chocolate!
Chocolate-covered espresso beans are a delicious caffeinated treat!
Can you eat coffee grounds?
Of course you can! Just make sure they're chocolate-covered first. 😉
Seriously though, chocolate-covered espresso beans are a delicious and easy snack to make at home. All you need is some chocolate and some coffee beans. Then follow the simple recipe at the bottom of this post!
What happens if I eat coffee grounds?
There's no need to worry if you accidentally consume coffee grounds – even though they can be bitter, they're not poisonous.
However, eating coffee grounds can sometimes cause gastrointestinal issues like nausea and diarrhea, as well as irritate the lining of your stomach.
If you eat chocolate-covered espresso beans, the chocolate will help to offset the effects of the caffeine.
And consuming a handful of chocolate-covered espresso beans will usually not cause any adverse effects.

Does chocolate have caffeine?
Yes, chocolate does contain caffeine. The amount of caffeine in chocolate varies depending on the type and quality of the chocolate.
For example, dark chocolate generally contains more caffeine than milk chocolate.
How much caffeine in a piece of chocolate
100 Grams of Dark Chocolate has 43mg of caffeine.
100 Grams of Milk Chocolate only has 20 mg of caffeine.
However, an average size chocolate bar is only about half the size of the amounts listed above.
Some brands of chocolate may also contain added caffeine.
Therefore, it is best to check the label to determine how much caffeine is in a particular brand or type of chocolate.
HOW MUCH CAFFEINE IS IN ESPRESSO BEANS
The amount of caffeine in espresso beans depends on the type and quality of coffee beans used.
The more expensive, high-quality coffee beans contain less caffeine than lower-priced varieties.
The caffeine content will also depend on how much the beans are roasted.
Generally speaking, espresso beans are made from Arabica coffee beans.
These are known for not being as high in caffeine compared to Robusta's which have more mild flavors and about twice as much caffeine as Arabicas.
A typical Arabica coffee bean contains somewhere between 1-2% caffeine whereas a Robusta can contain up to 3% caffeine.
How many chocolate-covered espresso beans equal a cup of coffee?
As an average rule, espresso beans have anywhere from 6-12 milligrams of caffeine per bean.
But if you add in the caffeine from the chocolate around the bean, it may be a bit more.
A cup of coffee has about 80-140 milligrams of caffeine depending on how it's brewed.
If you're used to drinking a cup of coffee with 140 milligrams, it would take between 10-15 chocolate espresso beans to get the same amount of caffeine.
This of course will vary according to the roast of the bean, and the caffeine in the chocolate used.
How many espresso beans can I eat?
You will definitely want to use moderation when eating espresso beans, as they are potent in caffeine.
Do not eat too many because there is definitely such thing as too much caffeine. It could lead to anxiety and nausea.
A small handful would probably be sufficient, or perhaps less if you have sensitivity to caffeine.
Do chocolate-covered espresso beans give you energy?
Yes, espresso beans in chocolate will give you a small jolt of energy, depending on how many you consume, of course!
The source of this energy is caffeine.
However, espresso beans actually contain less caffeine than coffee beans, because they are roasted for a longer period of time!
How do you eat chocolate-covered espresso beans?
You can either eat them plain or you can put them on top of chocolate ice cream or a decadent Triple Fudge cake or as a fancy garnish for Keto Cannoli Cheesecake.
Is there a difference between chocolate-covered espresso beans and coffee beans?
Yes, there are some flavor profile differences because of how long the beans are roasted.
Coffee beans are roasted for a shorter period of time, so they have a lighter flavor.
Espresso beans are roasted for a longer period of time, so they have a more bold, rich flavor.
HOW TO MAKE CHOCOLATE COVERED ESPRESSO BEANS
To make these sugar-free chocolate-covered espresso beans, you will want to start by lining a cookie sheet with parchment paper or even a silicone mat.
This is good so that your coated beans don’t stick to the pan.
Next, melt the chocolate in the microwave at 15-second intervals until it is fully melted, stirring at each interval (this is to keep the pesky chocolate from burning).
I opted to heat the chocolate in the microwave, but you are more than welcome to reach for a double boiler if you prefer.
Melt Chocolate
Add coffee beans
Spread on parchment to dry
Then you will coat the beans in the melted chocolate. Then with a fork, you will pull out the beans and shake them a little to get off any excess chocolate.
Then layout on your lined cookie sheet.
As an alternative method, you can spread the espresso beans out on your parchment paper and drizzle the melted chocolate over the beans.
Place in the fridge or overnight to let the chocolate set up. Then serve and enjoy these rich and caffeine-filled chocolate espresso beans.
HOW TO STORE LOW CARB CHOCOLATE COVERED ESPRESSO BEANS
If you want to keep low-carb chocolate-covered espresso beans fresh, store them in an airtight container or ziplock bag in the fridge.
If it's hot, don't leave them out on the counter because they can melt and stick together.
HOW MANY COFFEE BEANS IS IT SAFE TO EAT
Generally, you don’t want to go over 400 mg of caffeine in the day.
I don’t recommend needing that range of caffeine for the day.
But to equal that amount of caffeine this would range anywhere from 40-80 chocolate coffee beans depending on how much caffeine is in your beans.
CAN YOU FREEZE CHOCOLATE-COVERED ESPRESSO BEANS
If you freeze the coffee beans with chocolate you will find that condensation can build up once they begin to thaw.
The flavor will be slightly different and the texture can change in the bean a bit. So feel free to freeze in an airtight container if you would like.
Give these chocolate-covered coffee beans a try, and let me know what you think. It is a great pick-me-up snack for that 2 pm slump.

Oh, no! I heated my Lily’s white chocolate chips in 30 second increments. I stirred them after each heating...the third time, they turned almost powdery!!! What did I do wrong?
Sarah Hardy
The white chips are particularly finnicky. It sounds like they were heated too long and scorched. 🙁
Stacy
What brand espresso beans would you recommend?
Sarah Hardy
My favorite beans are anything from my local coffee shop.
Julie Berry
I’m assuming peanuts could be used instead of the beans, right?
Sarah Hardy
Oh yes, definitely!
